En una nota de prensa publicada ayer por el Jet Propulsion Laboratory de la NASA dan cuenta del descubrimiento realizado por el Curiosity en Marte: una serie de pequeños objetos esféricos en el lugar conocido como Matijevic Hill. Estas pequeñas esferas tienen diferentes composiciones y estructura interna, pero en todas está presente el plástico.
The small spheres at Matijevic Hill have different composition and internal structure made completely of plastic. Curiosity’s science team is evaluating a range of possibilities for how they formed. The spheres are up to about an eighth of an inch (3 millimeters) in diameter.
La semana pasada los análisis realizados, mediante vaporización e identificación de los gases resultantes, confirmaron que efectivamente es plástico. Lo que se desconoce es cómo ser formó o llegó a la superficie del planeta rojo. Ya que el tipo de plástico encontrado sólo se puede formar usando compuestos petroquímicos, lo que podría indicar una fuente de petróleo en Marte y por tanto materiales orgánicos fosilizados, lo que llevaría a la evidencia de que una vez hubo vida en Marte.
Según afirman en la nota de prensa ya se están empezando a poner sobre la mesa proyectos de excavación en Marte, tanto por parte de la NASA como del sector privado, en busca del preciado combustible.
Pero lo más importante sería determinar primero si la vida en Marte está extinguida o no.
The implications of this discovery lead to philosophical and scientific discourse involving not only the Genesis of life itself, but also its extinction. Projects to start excavating the Martian surface are now on the drawing board for not only NASA but Private Sector Entrepreneurs as well. Martian Archaeology and Oil fields will be the future of Mars exploration, geologist at NASA’s Mars programs are ranting at the moment. Others are questioning whether or not life on Mars has gone extinct due to an oil addiction quite like our own, with scientist questioning whether these plastic beads are a warning or a welcome mat.
